3. Desert boots or light hiking shoes — best for buggy tours and quad biking.

Sunglasses

Not optional. Desert glare off pale sand is intense. Wraparound styles also keep sand out of your eyes.

Hats

A wide-brimmed hat gives the best sun protection but will blow off during dune bashing. A fitted cap or a hat with a chin strap is more practical. Many people skip the hat and rely on a scarf instead.

Bag

Small crossbody bag or backpack. It must close securely, and you must be willing to let it get sandy. Leave anything expensive at the hotel.

Morning desert safari

Cooler temperatures and rising sun. Long-sleeved shirt in a light colour, cargo trousers or loose bottoms, closed-toe shoes, cap, sunglasses. Bring a light jacket for a very early start on a morning safari with quad biking.

Evening desert safari

You will cross from day into night, so layering matters most here. Breathable long-sleeved top, loose trousers, closed shoes with socks, scarf, sunglasses for the daylight portion, and a warm layer for after sunset — a denim jacket, cardigan or hoodie.

Sunrise desert safari

The sunrise safari starts cold and warms quickly. Start with a light jacket over your shirt, and expect to take it off within the hour.

Quad bike and buggy tours

Long sleeves and long trousers, no exceptions. Avoid loose flowing fabric that could catch. Wear a bandana or scarf over your mouth and nose. Secure your hat or leave it behind — a loose one will be gone in seconds.

Seasonal adjustments

Winter, November to February. Daytime 20-25°C, nights down to 10-15°C. This is the most comfortable season for a safari. Bring a proper warm layer for the camp — a fleece or light jacket, not just a scarf.

Summer, June to August. Daytime 40-45°C, nights still 28-35°C. Prioritise breathability above everything. You barely need an evening layer.
