What to Wear on a Dubai Desert Safari (Season-by-Season Packing Guide)
You do not need a new wardrobe for the dunes. You need clothes that survive three different climates in one afternoon: an air-conditioned 4×4, hot red sand, and a camp that can drop 10–15°C after sunset.
If you searched what to wear desert safari Dubai, here is the outfit that works almost every month:
- Loose cotton or linen that covers your shoulders and knees (that is the dress code that actually matters)
- Closed-toe trainers you do not mind filling with dust
- A layer you can put on at camp (hoodie, fleece, or shawl from October to March; skip it in July)
- Sunglasses, SPF, hair tie. Nothing you would cry about if it got red.
That is the whole dress code. The rest of this page is when to add a jacket, when to strip it back to linen, what men vs women actually pack, and which safari to book so you are not dressing for the wrong hour of the day.
Coming this week? Tell us the month — we will tell you the slot: WhatsApp +971 52 667 5817 · Evening Desert Safari from AED 202 · All desert tours
A shorter general outfit page already lives here: what to wear on a Dubai desert safari (men & women). Men-only cut: what to wear in desert safari Dubai for men. This guide is the seasonal packing list — month, time of day, and activity.
The 20-second outfit (then pick your season)
| Item | Men | Women | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Loose linen or cotton shirt; polo is fine | Loose blouse, tunic, or sleeved maxi | Tight tank, crop, club sequins |
| Bottom | Light trousers, chinos, cargo pants | Palazzo, linen trousers, modest midi | Skinny jeans, mini skirt, flowy train that eats sand |
| Shoes | Trainers or light hikers + socks | Closed trainers; strap sandals only at camp, not on quads | Heels, flip-flops, brand-new white sneakers |
| Layer | Hoodie or light jacket (winter evenings) | Shawl, cardigan, or fleece | Heavy wool coat — you will hate it in the 4×4 AC |
| Sun / sand | Cap or shemagh, sunglasses, SPF 50 | Hat or scarf, sunglasses, SPF, hair tie | Umbrella as a fashion object. Wind exists. |
If you are packing tonight and flying tomorrow, stop here, screenshot the table, book the evening safari. If you are visiting in August or January, keep reading — those two months do not share a closet.
Desert safari dress code: what is actually required
There is no uniform. Nobody at camp is handing out a Kandura as a ticket condition. Camps often offer Arabic dress for photos; you can say no. That is in the evening prep notes: how to prepare for an evening desert safari.
What people mean by desert safari dress code is three overlapping rules:
- Respect. Shoulders and knees covered is the same courtesy Visit Dubai suggests for public and cultural settings. Swimwear stays at the pool. See Visit Dubai and the UAE visitor portal.
- Physics. Sand is hot, fine, and sticky. Closed shoes beat sandals. Long loose fabric beats shorts on a dune face. White linen looks great in the hotel lobby and looks like a crime scene after Lahbab. More on the sand itself: red dunes guide.
- The machine. If you booked a quad or buggy, closed shoes are not a style note. They are how you keep your feet. Helmets are provided. Flip-flops are how people hop back to the 4×4 angry. Packages: evening + quad · Polaris buggy.
Hijab, abaya, kandura: wear them if you wear them in the city. They are welcome. A light cotton under-scarf beats a heavy formal one in July. You do not need to “go traditional” for the camera unless you want to.
Ramadan: same clothes, slightly more modest is appreciated in public. The safari still runs; shows and alcohol may be quieter. If your dates sit on a holiday, read safari pricing and book the slot before you iron anything.
Season-by-season: what to wear on a Dubai desert safari
Dubai has two real safari wardrobes: winter evenings that surprise you with cold, and summer afternoons that punish anything darker than sand. Official climate context: Visit Dubai (winter averages around the low 20s, summer can sit above 40°C in the city — the open desert is less polite).
| Season | Months | Day on the dunes | After sunset at camp | Pack this extra | Book this slot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak winter | Nov–Feb | 20–26°C, pleasant | 10–15°C — you will want sleeves | Fleece or proper jacket, not a scarf pretending to be a coat | Evening safari — this is the season it was invented for |
| Shoulder | Mar–Apr, Oct | 28–36°C | 18–24°C | Light long-sleeve you can roll, thin layer for camp | Evening still wins; mornings are lovely |
| Build-up / leftover heat | May, Sep | 35–42°C | Still warm | Hat, SPF 50, extra water habits | Private morning or evening — skip midday anything |
| High summer | Jun–Aug | 40–48°C, sand can burn | 28–35°C, still no jacket | Lightest linen you own, sun sleeves, no denim | Sunrise or morning. Evening only after you accept a hot first hour |
Winter (November–February): the jacket people forget
This is when most visitors come, and this is when they shiver through the fire show in a T-shirt.
Pickup is still warm. Dune bashing is comfortable. Then the sun drops and the open desert does not hold city heat. January camp can feel like 12°C with a breeze. A hoodie in the 4×4 looks silly at 3 PM and looks like genius at 8 PM.
What to wear desert safari for men in winter: cotton shirt or polo, light trousers, trainers, fleece or light puffer in a bag — not on your back during bashing if you run hot.
What to wear desert safari for women in winter: same base as summer, plus a cardigan or shawl you can sit on and then wear. Leggings under a midi if you feel the wind. Closed shoes, always.
Kids: one extra layer they can actually zip. They cool faster than you. Family notes: family desert safari Dubai.
Book: Evening Desert Safari from AED 202. Winter evenings are why this product exists. Peak season fills — how to book.
Spring and autumn (March, April, October)
The Goldilocks months, with a catch: April afternoons are already aggressive. Dress like late winter without the heavy fleece. A long-sleeve linen shirt does sun and camp. Sunglasses are not optional on the dune photo stop.
If you burn easily, treat April like early summer: hat, SPF, light colours. Book evening or compare morning vs evening vs sunrise.
Early summer and late summer (May, September)
You can still do evening. The first hour on sand will be hot. Hydrate before pickup. Light colours. No jeans. A cap you can crush in a bag.
Morning private is the kinder outfit day — you are done before the worst of it, in a 4×4 that is yours: Morning Desert Safari from AED 559 / vehicle (up to 6).
High summer (June–August): dress for the sun, pick the clock
Clothes cannot beat 45°C. Clock choice can. Wear the lightest loose cotton or linen you have. Long sleeves in pale fabric often feel cooler than a vest because they block UV. That sounds backwards until you have been on a dune at 4 PM in a strappy top.
Do not pack a winter jacket “just in case.” You will sit on it. Do pack SPF 50, a real hat, and closed shoes — summer sand at the surface is vicious. Evening camp stays warm; you will not freeze.
Summer outfit is half the battle. The other half is booking sunrise or morning, not a 3 PM shared pickup unless you like character-building. Why the calendar matters for price too: cheapest time to visit Dubai.
What to wear by safari type (the clothes change with the clock)
| Safari | When you are outside | Outfit tweak | Book |
|---|---|---|---|
| Evening (shared classic) | Afternoon sun → night camp | Layers. This is the one that needs the bag jacket in winter. | Evening from AED 202 |
| Morning private | Cool start, heat climbing | Long sleeve you can roll. No heavy coat. Back by lunch in city clothes if you want. | Morning private |
| Sunrise private | Coldest start of the three | Jacket on at the hotel, off by 8 AM. Best light, worst alarm. | Sunrise safari |
| Evening + quad | Same as evening + dust + throttle | Closed shoes non-negotiable. Tie hair. Skip loose scarves near wheels. Long sleeves save skin. | + 30-min quad from AED 294 |
| Buggy / Polaris | Dust in everything | Closed shoes, no flip-flops, nothing you love. Glasses strap. | Evening + buggy from AED 521 · morning buggy: 1-hour buggy |
What the evening ticket includes besides your outfit: what is included. Whether to go at all: is it worth it?
What to wear desert safari for men
Men overthink this into either “tactical beige” or “club shirt.” Neither is required.
The kit: light button-down or breathable polo, trousers you can sit cross-legged in, trainers with socks, sunglasses. Add a hoodie November–February. That is a complete male desert safari outfit.
Do not: jeans in June (they cook). Football shorts at camp if you can help it (sand + sun on thighs, and it looks sloppy next to families). Leather loafers. A black T-shirt that will show every dust bloom.
Shemagh / ghutra: useful as a dust cloth and sun wrap. Optional. You will not look more local; you will look like a tourist who read a blog. That is fine if it keeps sand out of your mouth on a windy crest.
Fuller male-only version: what to wear in desert safari Dubai for men.
What to wear desert safari for women
The brief is the same physics plus a bit more fabric for comfort and courtesy.
The kit: loose trousers or a midi/maxi you can climb into a Land Cruiser in, a top that covers shoulders, closed trainers, hair tie, sunglasses. A light scarf does sun, AC, and camp chill. Palazzo and linen beat skinny denim. A sleeved maxi dress works if it is not a silk train.
Do not: stilettos. Unsecured sandals on quad day. White-on-white “Instagram desert” looks unless you accept red hems forever. Heavy jewellery — dune bashing is a sieve. Short shorts are not illegal at most camps; they are uncomfortable and you will sit on sand.
Hijabi travellers: breathable abaya or a long tunic + trousers, cotton under-scarf, closed shoes. You already know how to layer; just pack the summer weight, not the wool.
More outfit combinations: men & women 2026 guide.
Kids, plus-size, modest, and “I only packed dresses”
Kids: closed shoes they can run in, a hat they will actually keep on, one warm layer in winter. Same age rules for dune bashing as always — clothes do not change that: is desert safari safe for kids?
If you only packed dresses: pick the longest, least precious one, add trainers, add a light pant or legging underneath if it is short. Buy cheap linen trousers in any Dubai supermarket on the way. Do not buy heels “for dinner at camp.” Dinner is sand.
Plus-size / mobility: loose cotton, elastic waist, shoes with a back strap. Private morning means you are not performing a costume change in a shared 4×4: private morning safari.
Pregnant: dress for comfort and skip the dunes. Outfit is the easy part. The medical part is not: desert safari during pregnancy.
What to pack in a small bag (and what to leave in the safe)
In the bag:
- Phone, power bank, maybe a zip bag — sand wrecks ports
- SPF 50, lip balm, tissues
- Light layer (seasonal)
- Prescriptions, motion-sickness tablets if you need them — evening prep · safety
- A little cash for tips, henna extras, camp snacks
- Spare socks if you hate grit
Leave at the hotel: passports, laptops, “good” watch, dangling earrings, the white trainers you just bought, drone unless you know the rules, glass perfume bottles.
Seatbelt on during dune bashing beats any outfit. If someone in the group should skip bashing, say so when you book — clothes will not save a bad back.
Month-by-month cheat sheet
| Month | Wear | Do not bother with | Default tour |
|---|---|---|---|
| January / February | Trousers, shirt, real jacket for camp | Shorts-only plan | Evening |
| March | Light layers, sunglasses | Heavy coat | Evening |
| April / May | Pale linen, hat, SPF | Dark denim | Evening or morning |
| June / July / August | Lightest long-sleeve cotton, hat, closed shoes | Jacket, jeans, midday safari | Sunrise or morning |
| September | Still summer clothes | Winter packing list you copied from January blogs | Morning or evening |
| October | Shoulder-season: linen + thin layer | — | Evening |
| November / December | Jacket in the bag, festive clothes that can take dust if it is NYE | Sequins as the only layer | Evening — book ahead in December |
December 31 is a clothes problem and a booking problem. If that is your date: treat it as winter evening plus a sold-out camp — WhatsApp early.
Book the safari that matches the clothes you already own
You should not buy a new outfit for six hours in the desert. You should pick the time of day that matches the suitcase you packed for Dubai.
- Packed city-winter layers? You are here Nov–Feb. Book the Evening Desert Safari. Bring the hoodie.
- Packed only resort linen? You are in summer. Book morning or sunrise. Do not white-knuckle a 3 PM dune in a vest.
- Packed trainers and want to drive? Add quad or buggy. Closed shoes stay on.
- Packed nothing closed-toe? Buy AED 40 trainers in Deira before pickup. Seriously. Sandals on a quad is how the day ends early.

Frequently asked questions
What to wear on a desert safari in Dubai?
Loose cotton or linen, shoulders and knees covered, closed trainers, sunglasses. Add a jacket for evening camp from November to February. That is the entire answer.
Is there a desert safari dress code?
No ticket uniform. Cover shoulders and knees out of respect and because of sun and sand. No swimwear. Camps are mixed families, not beach clubs.
What to wear on a desert safari for men?
Light shirt, light trousers, trainers, optional hoodie in winter. Not jeans in summer. Detail: men’s outfit guide.
What to wear on a desert safari for women?
Loose trousers or a practical midi, sleeved top or scarf, closed shoes, hair tie. Skip heels and unsecured sandals if you are going near quads.
Can I wear jeans on a desert safari?
In January at camp, they are tolerable. In July on a dune, they are a bad time. Soft cotton trousers win every month.
Can I wear shorts or a short dress?
You will see people do it. You will also see them pick sand out of their legs and look underdressed at dinner. Knee-length or longer is the comfortable, respectful call.
Are sandals OK?
For sitting at camp, maybe. For dune bashing, sandboarding, camel steps, and anything with an engine: no. Closed toes.
Should I wear white?
Red dune dust does not negotiate. Beige, khaki, rust, navy. Keep the white linen for brunch.
Do I need a jacket in summer?
No. You need shade, water, and a morning or late evening slot.
What do I wear for a morning vs evening safari?
Morning: sun protection, layer you can peel. Evening: the same, plus a warm layer in winter. Slot picker: which time to book.
Can I wear a hijab or abaya?
Yes. Choose a light fabric in summer.
Will they give me traditional clothes?
Often for photos, optional, at camp. Wear your own kit for the actual driving.
What should kids wear?
Closed shoes, hat, layers in winter, clothes you can wash. Same as you, smaller, dirtier.
Put the shoes on. Then book the hour that fits the weather.
If you remember one line: closed trainers, loose cotton, a jacket in winter, a hat in summer. The desert safari dress code is that simple. The conversion is picking evening in January and sunrise in July — not wearing a puffer in August.
